Japan’s Triangular Cooperation with its Ibero-American partners

In the framework of the Co-Laboratory organized by PIFCSS, JICA and AMEXCID, SEGIB presents an overview of the main data on Japan’s Triangular Cooperation with Ibero-America.

Between February 4th and 6th, the Ibero-American Program for the Strengthening of South-South Cooperation (PIFCSS by its Spanish acronym), together with the International Cooperation Agencies of Japan (JICA) and Mexico (AMEXCID by its Spanish acronym), co-organized a new Co-Laboratory on Triangular Cooperation in Mexico City. This activity was attended by the 21 Ibero-American countries that are members of PIFCSS, as well as by representatives of the Regional Fund for Triangular Cooperation with Latin-America and the Caribbean of the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ by its German acronym) and the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB by its Spanish acronym).

Considering the historical trajectory that Japan has in Triangular Cooperation with the Ibero-American region, through its Cooperation Partnership Programs, this activity seeks to reflect on lessons learned and on the potential improvements that can be made to this instrument. As JICA is currently committed to updating these programs, it is expected that the debate with its partners can contribute to generate greater synergies that can benefit all parties.

In this framework, SEGIB made a presentation –based on the more than 15 years of the region’s accumulated knowledge–, which showed the most relevant data and trends of the Triangular Cooperation that Japan has carried out with its Ibero-American partners between 2007 and 2023 (first and last year for which information is available).

The main highlights of this information are shown in a country Fact Sheet that includes data on the total number of Triangular Cooperation initiatives that Japan carried out with its Ibero-American partners between 2007 and 2023; their evolution during that period; the sectoral capacities that were strengthened; the Development Goals (SDGs) with which they were potentially aligned; and a breakdown of the same figures for each of the Ibero-American countries with which Japan partnered. As a new feature, the Fact Sheet is interactive, providing the users of this platform with the possibility of navigating through the different graphs.
