SEGIB presents the main findings of the TC project with the EU

With AUCI’s support, SEGIB organized the seminar New Mechanisms and Opportunities for Triangular Cooperation between the EU and Ibero-America, which took place in Uruguay.

On December 2nd and 3rd, various stakeholders gathered in Montevideo for the presentation of the results of the project implemented by SEGIB and co-financed by the European Union Regional Facility for Cooperation and International Partnerships – ADELANTE2: Knowledge generation and new instruments for EU-LAC Triangular Cooperation. This initiative was carried out in the framework of the analytical component of the ADELANTE Program, and it focused on knowledge generation and on implementing concrete actions to operationalize more effective triangular partnerships for the benefit of Ibero-American citizens.

This activity was conceived to be a space to reflect and exchange in order to strengthen bi-regional Triangular Cooperation (EU-LAC). The first morning was open to the participation of several Uruguayan institutions, with the objective of stressing the value of bi-regional cooperation between the EU and Ibero-America. Subsequently, and with the aim of fueling the debates, the main findings of the project were presented, specifically addressing issues such as:

• Triangular Cooperation on environment.
• Potential for Triangular Cooperation with other regions of the Global South.
• Innovative topics related to Triangular Cooperation: Artificial Intelligence and scientific networks.
• Innovative instruments for Triangular Cooperation: proposals on Decentralized Cooperation and Indigenous Peoples.

The event, in which the Heads of Cooperation and/or delegates from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay participated, was led by SEGIB, representatives of the EU, and AUCI.

In addition, the experts which carried out the project’s studies and designed the instruments were able to present their work in panels that were dedicated to analyze —from a multidimensional perspective— how to take advantage of the experience on specific topics to strengthen ties between the two regions. The presence of other TC stakeholders, such as UNOSSC, UNDP, CAF, GIZ, JICA, and the OECD, should also be highlighted.

This seminar marks the end of a period of close collaboration between SEGIB and the European Union, which began in 2020 with the project Innovative Triangular Cooperation for a New Development Agenda, which promoted research on certain sectoral issues (TC and SDGs; TC and information systems; the strategic value of TC between the EU and LAC) and laid the foundations for the development of specific TC instruments, which were designed during this second project (Decentralized South-South and Triangular Cooperation and TC for and with Indigenous Peoples).
